Responding to the Cabinet Secretary’s announcement of the Government’s response to Professor Muir’s report, EIS General Secretary Larry Flanagan said,

“Ken Muir’s report is comprehensive and points very strongly to the need for education agencies to be more oriented towards both students and practitioners – that is very welcome but it is essential that Government ensures that new governance models put in place capture that ambition and in particular that teachers have representative voices in those organisations.”

He added, “There is an opportunity in a post pandemic recovery period to side-line the interminable party politicking around education and to put teachers centre stage in an empowered education system that is focussed on teaching and learning, on pupil and teacher well-being and on education recovery.”

Mr Flanagan concluded, “We welcome confirmation of the replacement of the SQA and look forward to the work of Professor Hayward in shaping a 21st Century qualification system.”
