Lecturing staff at Scotland’s Rural University College (SRUC) will take their fourth day of strike action today (Monday) as a programme of industrial action in a long-running dispute over pay and grading enters its 4th week.
Members have already taken three days of strike action, with further strike days planned together with an ongoing programme of action short of strike.
Commenting, EIS General Secretary Larry Flanagan said, "With the programme of strike action at SRUC now entering its fourth week, it is overdue for management to heed the legitimate concerns of lecturing staff. Pay for lecturers at SRUC has fallen significantly behind the norms across both the Further and Higher education sectors and it is time for management to commit to pay their lecturers fairly for the work they do.”
Mr Flanagan continued, “Despite the continuing intransigence of SRUC management, our members remain determined to secure a long-awaited fair pay and grading agreement for all lecturing staff. The EIS has been in touch with SRUC management again last week to re-emphasise the critical issues that must be addressed to end this dispute, and we await a response to this communication.”
A recent EIS statutory ballot provided a clear legal mandate for a move to industrial action, including strike action. Support for industrial action short of strike was extremely strong (93% of those voting) and support for strike action was also very strong (86%). Turnout in the ballot was 65%, well above the legal minimum turnout set by the UK government’s trade union law restrictions. Support from members on strike days has been equally strong, with picket lines in place at all SRUC campuses on every day of strike action.
