Members in Independent Schools

Created on: 19 Apr 2023 | Last modified: 09 Nov 2023

The EIS has a significant number of members in the independent (also known as private) schools sector in Scotland.

We welcome applications for membership from all GTCS registered teachers, including those part-way through the Teacher Induction Scheme (TIS), Principal Teachers and school leaders.

Around 50% of Scotland’s independent schools teachers are members of the EIS; many of whom have joint membership with the National Education Union (NEU) as they were previously ATL members. All independent school members of the EIS are full EIS members and eligible for EIS elections and positions.

While teachers in both state and independent schools across Scotland experience many of the same professional issues, the EIS recognises that there are specific issues for our members working in independent schools.
