Scotland’s largest teaching union, the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) has welcomed today’s agreement at the Scottish Negotiating Committee for Teachers (SNCT) which recognises the contribution made by Scotland’s Chartered Teachers and offers salary protection to this group of teachers in the wake of the Scottish Government’s decision to scrap the CT scheme.
Commenting, EIS General Secretary Larry Flanagan said,
"The EIS was opposed to the ill-founded recommendation in the McCormac Review which called for the scrapping of Scotland’s world-leading Chartered Teacher scheme."
"The EIS regarded the Cabinet Secretary’s subsequent abrupt termination of the Chartered Teacher scheme as a major mistake and we strongly believe that the scheme, which attracted international praise and recognition, should still be open."
"The EIS firmly believes that the Chartered Teacher scheme was one of the most effective outcomes of the 21st Century Teaching Agreement.”
On the specifics of todays’ agreement, Mr Flanagan said,
"In very difficult financial circumstances, we welcome the fact that - through this SNCT agreement - those Chartered Teachers already in post will be able to continue to enhance practice in their schools, with appropriate financial recognition. This will be welcome news for those concerned.
We are glad to have secured this protection for those teachers who have committed their own time and resources to pursue Chartered Teacher status”.
