An online EIS Renfrewshire Equality Network event ran on 23rd May 2023.
Whether we are Black, Asian, or white, whether we have lived here our whole lives or have moved here from elsewhere, we all want to feel welcome at our school and in the place where we work.
Young people have a right to learn, and teachers have a right to work in an educational environment where they are valued and where they can be themselves. But some people and media outlets spread myths about people who seek asylum, that seeks to distract us from how political decisions are harming our communities and our schools.
In the context of a rise in cost of living and cuts to education budgets, teachers are working harder every day to get it right for every child. By joining together, we can make positive changes in our communities, and make our schools welcoming for all.
At this online meeting, we introduced the EIS's local and national equality work, and shared useful resources, such as the new 'the Sea of Paperwork' booklet, and the EIS 'Welcome Packs', which are part of our work to welcome migrants, refugees and asylum seekers to Scottish education.
