Glasgow City Council Budget Cuts
EIS Glasgow is campaigning against cuts proposed that will see 450 teachers’ jobs lost over the next three years, starting with 172 jobs from August. Action began ahead of the Easter Break with a large demonstration of teachers, support staff and further demonstrations were held at Govan Cross on 8th of May and Langside Halls on the 15th of May.

The EIS is clear that these cuts are contrary to the Scottish Government’s commitment to increase teacher numbers and the decision must be reconsidered. A “dispute” has been lodged with the Council and the Local Association has opened a consultative ballot on strike action which will run from Monday 20th May until Monday 10th June.

Campaigning for a Pay Deal and Against Cuts in Scotland’s Colleges
EIS FELA members are participating in a further three weeks of strike action as part of an industrial action programme to defend pay. This began on Monday 20th May and will run through to Friday 7th June. The College sector is part of the public sector, and the current pay offer has elements that amount to less than the Scottish Government’s public sector pay policy. FE college lecturers have not had a pay increase since August 2021.
The EIS FELA National Pay Dispute for lecturing staff would benefit from receiving support from all EIS members in asking the Scottish Government to deliver the manifesto that they were elected on with regards to colleges. The manifesto acknowledges the vital role of Scotland’s colleges in transforming lives and supporting economic and social development, and that colleges require financial sustainability for the national mission of social and economic recovery from the pandemic.

As outlined in the recent Glasgow Herald articles, the Scottish Government has only given flat cash funding to colleges over the last three years - and this has caused cuts to be made in courses. It is time for the Scottish Government to stand by its manifesto commitments and prioritise funding for Scotland’s colleges.
The EIS asks members to email their local SNP MSPs - both constituency and regional - to call on SNP MSPs to deliver more for colleges. An email will be sent to all members individually with a weblink which takes you to a webpage where entering your home postcode will provide a list of your SNP MSPs (constituency and regional list, along with emails) and a model email to send them.
Thanks, in anticipation of your support in encouraging the Scottish Government to honour its manifesto promise and properly support colleges.
Action for Reps and Branch Secretaries: Please highlight the action to members and send messages of support from your Branch to your nearest FELA College Branch.

Engagement with EIS Organisers

It is important for EIS reps and Branch Secretaries to have two-way communications with their EIS Organisers.
We have a team of EIS Organisers that support and visit branches to discuss our latest campaigns, local campaign issues and to support Reps.

National Demonstration: Free Palestine; Stop Arming Israel.
Saturday 15th June at 11am, George Square, Glasgow.
Following on from the STUC Congress decision to support national events in support of a ceasefire and freedom for Palestinians, the STUC have agreed to support the national demonstration on 15th June in Glasgow.
The event is supported already by pro-Palestine groups, Stop the War, Scottish CND, and a range of affiliated unions. Its central call is for a ceasefire, the end of weapons sales to Israel and against the spread of war in the Middle East.
The EIS stands with the wider trade union movement across the UK in support of an immediate ceasefire, and reiterates our support for a just, comprehensive and lasting peace that is consistent with international law.
Members and Reps are encouraged to attend.
Action for Reps and Branch Secretaries: Please highlight the details of the demonstration to members.
