We would like to say words of support towards UHI Shetland.
Bon Accord Accountancy Ltd currently have 3 x Accounting Apprentices and 1 x Administration apprentice studying through UHI Shetland. This is something we would actively like to continue in the future and works very well for us as employers. Our apprentices are able to stay in Shetland to study whilst gaining a recognised accountancy qualification (AAT) and gaining valuable office-based experience. The AAT qualification they gain as part of their apprenticeship is a stepping stone towards the chartered accountancy (ACCA) exams should they wish to pursue further studies.
Currently in Shetland there is a shortage of qualified and experienced accountancy workers, making recruitment difficult. With new Making Tax Digital legislation to be implemented by HMRC in 2026, the demand for accountancy vacancies in Shetland will increase.
The support that UHI Shetland provide us as employers and our students is excellent. I believe the information, feedback and regular reviews is valuable, and the outstanding results of our apprentices is reflected in the service provided by UHI Shetland. One of our apprentices won Scottish Modern Apprentice of the Year – Level 5 in 2022.
I am a previous student of UHI Shetland, many years ago I studied HND Accounting part time at Shetland College, before later progressing onto my chartered accountancy (ACCA) exams. At the time I didn’t wish to leave Shetland and go to university so studying at UHI Shetland whilst working was ideal for me.
The ability for our employees to study in Shetland means that we can be fully inclusive in our recruitment process. One of our apprentices is a working mother who would be unable to attend college on the mainland.
