Campaign update - Sept 2024

Created on: 11 Sep 2024

Pupil Behaviour and Health & Safety

We are continuing to advise members to ask employers for risk assessments if they believe that they are at risk of harm in their classrooms, including any risk of violence or aggression from pupils or parents/carers. We are also keen to ensure that employers uphold risk assessments after they are reached and captured in writing. Guidance on risk assessment will be recirculated to members and reps.

We will publish EIS analysis of SG Pupil Behaviour National Action Plan - including EIS guidance and call for additional resources to facilitate it.

Through the campaign the EIS continues to highlight the need for additional resources to support pupils who display violent behaviours and that working on tackling the root causes of violence is key. We will soon be launching refreshed guidance on the impact of poverty and PACT training to highlight the relationships between violent behaviours, poverty, mental health and ASN.

Workload and Class Contact Time

Teacher workload and the impact on member wellbeing continues to be a significant theme of the SU4QE campaign. We will be using the findings of the recent Independent Research on Teachers Workload to lobby Scottish Government, and will be issuing guidance for members on what should be done locally to begin to tackle workload. An EIS delegation and the independent research team will be meeting the Cabinet Secretary to discuss the workload research findings and the policy implications.

ASN

An event to raise awareness of the challenges related to ASN funding will be held in Parliament in December, co-hosted by Pam Duncan-Glancy, MSP, and Willie Rennie, MSP. This event builds on the Joint Statement on ASN published earlier this year.

Member Survey and Awareness Raising

This year an all member survey will be undertaken in order to gain important data and experiences directly from members. Please look out for more information and a link to complete this survey later in the Autumn term.

As part of the campaign, there will be opportunities for members to learn more about the connections in the UN High Level Panel on the Teaching Profession report to the SU4QE campaign.

Further details will be shared in the coming months.
