Wednesday 26th March 2025

EIS ULA Annual Conference

Conference will take place at the Voco Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow.

This year's conference will focus on a discussion of the degrowth movement, a socio-economic framework that challenges the pattern of seeking endless economic growth and the idea that economies cannot continue to grow in a world of finite resource, where they should seek to use fewer resources / energy and prioritise well-being over profit. After the keynote speaker, workshops will be organised to facilitate discussions amongst delegates on how academic staff and students may look to introduce ideas from the movement at their educational institutions.

The degrowth movement advocates for a deliberate reduction in resource consumption and economic activity in developed nations, aiming to create a more equitable and sustainable society. This approach recognises that continued growth is unsustainable in the face of climate change and ecological degradation, and proposes a shift towards prioritising well-being, social justice, and environmental protection.  HEIs could contribute to the development of innovative solutions for a more sustainable future. Moreover, by reducing their own environmental impact, HEIs could serve as models of sustainability for the wider community.

After lunch, the main conference business will take place and will include an update on the national negotiating picture and move on to debate and voting on motions submitted by EIS ULA Branches and Executive Committee. This will require members who have been selected to vote by their branches to attend, contribute to debate if they wish and vote on motions. Conference sets policy for the EIS ULA for the coming year and this is your chance to get involved in debating and setting that policy.

All conference delegates are welcome to listen to the motions debate but those who are not required to vote on motions can stay as an Observer,  join an excursion or participate in an organising workshop being delivered by EIS Organisers.

In the evening, conference will be followed by a drinks reception & dinner which you are all welcome to attend.
