Pay 2024/25 and Reduction in Class Contact Time
Members will be aware that EIS reps at the SNCT, via the Teachers' Panel, are continuing to pursue progress in relation to both the 2024/25 pay round and the implementation of the Scottish Government's manifesto commitment on class contact time.
Details of the frustrating lack of progress on both matters have been outlined in previous SNCT updates sent to all members. The EIS remains committed to negotiating on both the 2024/25 pay award and also ensuring that the reduction in class contact time to 21 hours ensures a step forward in reducing workload.

Reclassification of Back Pay Received in the Tax Year 2023/24
Members who received their back pay relating to the 2022/23 tax year in their April or May 2023 salaries should refer to the amended advice in relation to the rectification of their tax position.
In summary, HMRC have now instructed the employing Local Authorities to make the necessary amendments through payroll and have advised the EIS that they will not now process tax refunds based on correspondence from individual members.

Campaigning for a Pay Deal and Against Cuts in Scotland Colleges
The EIS FELA National Pay Dispute for lecturing staff would benefit from receiving support from all EIS members in asking the Scottish Government to deliver the manifesto that they were elected on with regards to colleges. The manifesto acknowledges the vital role of Scotland’s colleges in transforming lives and supporting economic and social development, and that colleges require financial sustainability for the national mission of social and economic recovery from the pandemic.
As outlined in the recent Glasgow Herald articles, the Scottish Government has only given flat cash funding to colleges over the last three years - and this has caused cuts to be made in courses.
It is time for Scottish Government to stand by its manifesto commitments and prioritise funding for Scotland’s colleges.
The EIS asks members to email their local SNP MSPs - both constituency and regional - to call on SNP MSPs to deliver more for colleges. An email will be sent to all members individually with a weblink which takes you to a webpage where entering your home postcode will provide a list of your SNP MSPs (constituency and regional list, along with emails) and a model e-mail to send them.
Thanks, in anticipation of your support in encouraging the Scottish Government to honour its manifesto promise and properly support colleges.

Glasgow City Council has voted through a budget which cuts 172 teachers this year, with the number rising to 450 over the next three years.
The EIS is clear that our members will simply not be able to provide the level of service we are currently providing in the face of these cuts. It is imperative that councillors rethink their decision, prioritise Glasgow’s children and young people and reverse these cuts to teacher numbers.
A petition has been started which we would encourage all teachers and members of the public to sign to make clear their objections to these cuts.

Justice for Sheku Bayoh - Mass Vigil, Thursday, 6 June
Sheku Bayoh died after being restrained by officers in Kirkcaldy in May 2015. Seven years on, not one officer has been disciplined, let alone charged nor will any ever face trial for Sheku’s death.
Please support the mass vigil for Sheku Bayoh on Thursday 6 June 2024 in Festival Square, Edinburgh at 8.45am – 10am.
EIS Equality Officer Selma Augestad will be speaking at the event, and buses will be provided after the vigil to allow AGM delegates who live nearby, to attend the vigil before travelling to the AGM in Dundee.
